An herbalist’s perspective: St. John’s Wort is widely considered a safe herb in the herbal community, used commonly for mood and anxiety. Use of caution is recommended when taking St. John’s Wort alongside medications because of the way it is metabolized. It is absorbed in the body via the CYP450 enzyme pathway, which is the same that a lot of commonly prescribed medications do as well, like birth control pills, anti depressants, anti virals, benzodiazapenes and so forth. It is out of an abundance of caution that you should consult with your doctors regarding your St John’s Wort intake and dosage, just to be safe and to keep your medications at their intended therapeutic dose. And because we don’t give medical advice on our site, we want to make sure you’re aware of herb-drug interactions when they may occur so that you can make the best decision for yourself.

To read more on how St. John’s Wort is metabolized in the body, its pharmacokinetics and its pharmacodynamics, and to nerd out on a scientific research paper like we do, here is a good one on the topic.
